Welcoming Interim Principal Kristi Ward

Dear families and students of Lake Nokomis Keewaydin and Wenonah,

I am writing to share with you that Principal La Shawn Ray will be leaving Keewaydin to become an Associate Superintendent for Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS). Principal Kelly Wright will remain principal at Wenonah, and Principal Kristi Ward is being hired as the interim principal at Keewaydin for the 2019-20 school year. We recognize this will be a big change for some of you.

At Keewaydin, Principal Ray has focused on providing opportunities for all students in line with the district’s focus on equity while also fostering a welcoming and safe learning environment at school. In his time at Keewaydin, behavior referrals have significantly decreased and more students have a positive perception of their school. We know he will bring this same level of leadership to supporting schools throughout MPS.

We are excited to welcome Principal Kristi Ward back to MPS. Principal Ward most recently served as an Equity Programming Principal for Shakopee Public Schools. Prior to that, she was a leader and teacher in schools throughout MPS for more than 22 years. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Keewaydin and is committed to supporting students, families and staff through the transition. There will be a meet and greet opportunity with Principal Ward on July 31 from 4-6 p.m. at Keewaydin.

Minneapolis Public Schools looks forward to engaging the Lake Nokomis communities and staff members in the search for a new leader. Our goal is to find the best match for Keewaydin using a leadership profile created by your community. We will work with the site council, school staff and any interested students and community members to determine the qualities and characteristics your community finds most important in a school leader. To share your thoughts and help inform the leadership profile, we invite you to complete a survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CKZYMQ6.

Thank you for your continued commitment to your students’ academic success. If you have any questions, please contact me at Brian.Zambreno@mpls.k12.mn.us.

Sincerely,

Brian Zambreno
Associate Superintendent
