Ms. Ruth's Special Education Classroom (ASD)

My name is Ruth Koontz and I have taught in Minneapolis for 6 years, but have been at Wenonah for 10 years total.  I started here as a special education assistant (SEA) and moved up to classroom teacher.  I have a master's in special education, and am licensed in general education K-8 social studies.  I initially started my career life with a BA in architecture and spent several years working in city planning and architecture.  Each of my past experiences have added to the skills that I use everyday (such as quick sketches to show students what is expected).

I live in Minneapolis and have renovated a 107 year old house that had been used as a rooming house just prior to my buying it.  I continue to work on small and large projects over the years.  When I am not using hammers and saws, I like to read, bake, and spend time with my godchildren.  I love to travel and have been to 5 continents including student teaching in Australia long ago.

I love working with students with autism and find each child an inspiration.  The students work so hard and teach me something new every day.  Every day we celebrate little victories as the students become more and more independent.
