6th Grade Math

My name is Amanda Martinson and I'm very excited to be part of the 6th grade team at Keewaydin.  I've taught middle school math for 9 years in Minneapolis.

This year in math, students will learn a variety of new math concepts and skills (Learning Targets).  We will be following the district's Focused Instruction that includes algebra, geometry, probability, number sense, statistics, and basic skills.

We are currently working on Unit 3:  2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional Geometry

We will explore several kinds of measurement: perimeter, area, and volume.  It is important to study these ideas together and to probe their relationship to each other.

Specifically, we'll be working on these skills:

  • calculating the area of a variety of quadrilaterals, and justifying the formulas and/or other methods used;
  • estimating the perimeter and area of irregular figures on a grid; and
  • justifying how to solve mathematical and real-world problems involving the surface area and volume of triangular and rectangular prisms.
