4th grade teacher room 109

Hello and welcome to Room 109

My name is Katie Marie Johnson. I have worked for Mpls Public Schools since 2010. I am overjoyed to be at Keewaydin working with your fourth graders.

This is the second career for my life, Act 2! I spent the majority of my life in the restaurant industry. About 15 years ago, my oldest son underwent major brain surgery and it was life changing for our whole family. Watching him relearn tasks inspired me to rethink my own education goals. I was soon back in college pursuing a teaching degree in Elementary Education. I received my AS through MCTC in the Urban Education Department and my BS through Augsburg. I knew immediately that teaching children is my purpose.

I've been married for 26 years. Van and I have lived and raised our family in South Minneapolis. Our boys attended Minneapolis Public Schools K-12 and Hendrix received extra support at Transitions Plus after graduating from South High School.

Along with all the joys that come from teaching and preparation, I enjoy playing the guitar and singing, gardening, year round cycling, sewing and knitting, and repurposing old objects.

Please come and visit our classroom anytime. You can reach me by email at

MCA Reading & Math Practice

During school we logged onto the ipads to practice the MCA sample questions. Anyone can try it!

Students study about the Underground Railroad, hidden messages in spirituals, Freedom Seekers, the wording of the Constitution and 13th and 14th ammendments.

Black Socks

We were able to put one of Room 109's favorite "songs to sing" on the dulcimer. This required LOTS of practice, discussion, breaking it into smaller bits, slowing down the tempo, and patience. We did it!
