4th grade teacher room 109

Hello and welcome to Room 109

My name is Katie Marie Johnson. I have worked for Mpls Public Schools since 2010. I am overjoyed to be at Keewaydin working with your fourth graders.

This is the second career for my life, Act 2! I spent the majority of my life in the restaurant industry. About 15 years ago, my oldest son underwent major brain surgery and it was life changing for our whole family. Watching him relearn tasks inspired me to rethink my own education goals. I was soon back in college pursuing a teaching degree in Elementary Education. I received my AS through MCTC in the Urban Education Department and my BS through Augsburg. I knew immediately that teaching children is my purpose.

I've been married for 26 years. Van and I have lived and raised our family in South Minneapolis. Our boys attended Minneapolis Public Schools K-12 and Hendrix received extra support at Transitions Plus after graduating from South High School.

Along with all the joys that come from teaching and preparation, I enjoy playing the guitar and singing, gardening, year round cycling, sewing and knitting, and repurposing old objects.

Please come and visit our classroom anytime. You can reach me by email at

Social Studies Research Projects

Student created lesson about the various regions in the United States. Students designed the lesson content according to the standards and what they were most interested in learning about the regions. They included creating a map with TODALS (title, orientation/compass rose, date, author, legend/key, and scale). They used 3 resource materials and wrote a research paper including a bibliography. They presented their findings and took notes on each other's region presentations. Congratulations room 109! Job WELL DONE!
