4th grade teacher room 109

Hello and welcome to Room 109

My name is Katie Marie Johnson. I have worked for Mpls Public Schools since 2010. I am overjoyed to be at Keewaydin working with your fourth graders.

This is the second career for my life, Act 2! I spent the majority of my life in the restaurant industry. About 15 years ago, my oldest son underwent major brain surgery and it was life changing for our whole family. Watching him relearn tasks inspired me to rethink my own education goals. I was soon back in college pursuing a teaching degree in Elementary Education. I received my AS through MCTC in the Urban Education Department and my BS through Augsburg. I knew immediately that teaching children is my purpose.

I've been married for 26 years. Van and I have lived and raised our family in South Minneapolis. Our boys attended Minneapolis Public Schools K-12 and Hendrix received extra support at Transitions Plus after graduating from South High School.

Along with all the joys that come from teaching and preparation, I enjoy playing the guitar and singing, gardening, year round cycling, sewing and knitting, and repurposing old objects.

Please come and visit our classroom anytime. You can reach me by email at Katherine.Johnson@mpls.k12.mn.us

Wildlife Refuge Under the Microscope

Today students explored the outdoors at the Wildlife Refuge. The task was to find nature to observe under the microscope. The trail was pure ice making our exploration a bit tricky. Students collected bark, lichen, moss, thorns, buds, seeds, pods, chunks of ice and more! Our items were stashed in a petri dish. Eagerly we headed back to the science lab to examine our findings under the microscope. Students worked hard getting the lens into focus, drawing what they observed, and sharing especially cool findings. Ms. Hall's classroom found a cute little bug on a piece of bark. Luckily they were able to show us and we snapped a picture of it! This fieldtrip was a big hit for room 109.
